Medical Privacy in Employer Conversations

How to answer workplace questions about sickness absence while protecting diagnosis details and keeping communication constructive.

Separate work facts from medical facts

A manager may reasonably need to plan around the expected absence and know whether work can be handed over. That does not make every medical detail relevant. A useful boundary is to discuss work capacity, expected timing, and practical handover while leaving the diagnosis between you and your treating professionals.

Answer the question behind the question

When asked “What is wrong?”, you can acknowledge the planning concern: “I am unable to work and currently expect to be absent through Thursday. I will update you if that changes.” This gives operational information without opening a medical discussion.

Special circumstances

Safety-sensitive work, contagious illness, requested adjustments, occupational health involvement, or a formal reintegration process can raise additional questions. The right response depends on why information is requested and who will receive it. Record important exchanges and seek tailored legal advice where employment consequences are threatened.
